One of the most beautiful aspects of a Montessori education is the mixing of ages. Not only do our classrooms have mixed age groups, but at Haven we also have the advantage of all of our classrooms being under one roof, infants through 6th grade! We have implemented a Reading Buddies program which allows the oldest students in upper elementary to help younger students K-3rd grade practice reading. When reading to another child, the new readers often feel less intimidated and therefore more confident. The older students are so patient and encouraging, and it really helps to solidify their role as leaders of their school. For the upper elementary students, we have a sign up sheet for this program and it is always filled up as soon as it goes out! It is truly special to see the students supporting our younger friends in this way.

Now that the new school year is in full swing, we would love to take a moment to properly introduce our new Assistant Director, Taylor Richards! Prior to joining Haven, she worked as a special education teacher and program specialist in FUSD. We are already greatly benefiting from Taylor’s extensive experience in general and special education. She has quickly integrated into our community as both our Assistant Director and a parent! Taylor is passionate about student success, and quickly learning about the Montessori method.
Taylor says, “I am looking forward to building connections with the students and families here at Haven! I hope to help continue to nurture the learning and growing that happens in and outside these old walls. I feel so grateful to work in such a supportive community that aligns with my educational philosophy and where I can honestly say that my boys and I are excited to wake up and go to school everyday.”
We are incredibly lucky that Ms. Taylor chose to join our Haven team. Please take a moment to welcome her!
